Big Data

What is big data?

Big data is the set of technologies created to store, analyze, and manage massive data, a macro tool aimed at identifying patterns and to design intelligent solutions in the current chaos of information explosion. Today it is used in areas as diverse as medicine, agriculture, gambling, environmental protection, and the commercial/marketing fields.

Its possibilities are practically endless: the browser knows if the route that a user has consulted suffers traffic retentions and suggests alternatives; a subscription streaming television channel defines the characters and plot of its most successful series by analyzing what content its viewers consume and prefer; smartwatches record the pulses of millions of users and identify patterns that anticipate and prevent cardiovascular disease; humidity sensors in crop fields plan irrigation by combining their data with weather forecasts and so on.

Its applications have even reached the political sphere: Juan Verde, the Spanish advisor in the last two campaigns of the Democratic Party in the US, went so far as to affirm: “These elections are not those of television, they are those of big data.”
